Phonological Awareness

Phonological Awareness

An underpinning component of a robust literacy approach.

EQUIPPED FOR READING SUCCESS By Dr. David Kilpatrick

A Comprehensive, Step by Step Program for Developing Phonemic Awareness and Fluent Word Recognition.

This resource provides 4 parallel forms of the PAST test – it takes approx. 5 to 10 min only to administer and provides you with exactly the stage of instruction the student requires. This stage then corresponds to the sections within the book, ie if your student struggles with LEVEL H in the test, there are literally hundreds of 1-minute drills available within the Level H section in the book. With the 4 versions available, the PAST test can be used periodically for progress monitoring as well as an initial assessment of need.

In addition, David Kilpatrick has written invaluable text at the beginning of this book. 14 chapters of it!
PART 1 – What Needs to be Done and
Part 2 – How To Do It
Heard of “orthographic mapping” – David describes this in detail and its relationship to ‘sight words’ in Chapter 4. HINT: we do not learn sight words visually! Ideas for spelling and assisting those who find it difficult are there too in Chapters 6 and 13.

This resource is useful for classroom and literacy invention applications. Parents, teachers, as well as learning support staff both within Primary and High school settings will find this book well worth their consideration.

Seelect is incredibly proud to have brought this resource to Australia.

We deal directly with David and Andrea Kilpatrick and feel privileged to do so.

The Heggerty Books

Currently there are 3 Heggerty books. Originally called Phonemic Awareness The Skills That They Need to Succeed, and produced in the US only, we are now very proud that our local printer in Adelaide produces the Australian version of Phonemic Awareness by Michael Heggerty. Seelect ships throughout Australia and New Zealand (and anywhere else we are asked!)

The PURPLE book is for pre formal schooling – 4 to 5 year olds.
The BLUE book is for the first year of formal schooling (Foundation, Reception, Pre Primary)
The YELLOW book is for the second year of formal schooling (Year 1)

HOWEVER, please consider your students’ previous PA training (or lack of) when choosing the book. Teachers and Speech Pathologists have recommended the following,

‘If you find the Blue Book is a little too far advanced for your Receptions
(at the beginning of the year)…
go with the Purple book for the first 6 months using every alternative week’s lessons, then halfway through the year begin the Blue Book at Week 1 of the programme and continue week by week. The following year begin at Week 1 again with those students as year 1s. ‘

The new Early Years Pre Kindergarten PA book focuses exclusively on phonological awareness (it does not include a phonemic awareness component like the other levels), only practising 5 out of the 8 phonological awareness skills (it will not include the advanced phonological/phonemic awareness manipulation skills of Adding, Substituting, and Deleting).

At present moment, the version sold (and eventually printed) in Australia will just be the US version. There will not be an Australian version available to start (similar to Bridge The Gap).
